Latest Artwork and Plans

I’m aware I’ve been a little remiss lately in updating my blog, so here’s a quick update. I made the below this weekend as a bit of practice. I may also produce it as a print to sell at Cons.

I’ve also done these two commissions for a private commissioner, and am working on some artwork for a trading card game.

While browsing around Renderosity this morning, I also found this model.  Oooo the possibilities!

I’ve been really busy with the day-job in the last few months, but I made some time for fun renders the other week and made this image.  It’s since been awarded Picture of the Week on Dreamslayer Artworks. 🙂

Finished Role Play Group Commission

I’ve recently finished one of my most ambitious pictures so far. This was a picture commissioned by an individual of the characters in his role play group. The figures were set up in Poser then exported to Vue for rendering. I had to turn all the figures to bounding boxes to interact with the scene, and the final render took 10 hrs.

My next piece will have more characters and probably take a darn sight longer. I’ll also have to render it in 2 bits, as Vue is just not happy with me having so many characters in the scene!

Bring on that 6-core i7!

Current Commission and Gnomes in 3D

Posted in Commissions with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on February 16, 2013 by seedydeedee

I’m busily working away on my latest commission piece, which is without a doubt one of the most complex and challenging pieces I’ve ever attempted.  It’s a role-play based picture and has  5 non-human characters, including 2 gnomes, and a bunch of humans hanging around in the background.  It’s going to have 9-10 characters in it by the time it’s finished, which I think is topped only by number of figures (11) in the cover art I did with Dan Galli for Zombidays.  12 if you count the head.

I’m really hoping Vue is going to cope with that many figures, but suspect I may need to render it in 2 halves – the main characters in one, and the humans in another.  I think my main challenge however is going to come in the form of the gnomes. I’m not sure whether to make them full-size and shrink them down, giving them gnome-like proportions, or whether to use some shorter characters (although I would probably be scratching around in my Runtimes for suitable outfits then).

Any advice on gnome-rendering much appreciated. 😀

Interested in learning 3D but don’t know where to start? Poser is the easy answer. Join Steve Cooper, Poser product manager, in this 1-hour webinar for beginners. Don’t know a wireframe from a keyframe? Steve will cover the basics to give you a better understanding of how to find your way around Poser and its 3D environment. The following fundamentals will be covered in an easy to follow, minimum jargon fashion:

1. Interface Orientation – what do all of those dials and widgets actually do? Take a tour of the controls and learn the basics of what you will need when first starting to work on Poser. Posing controls, lights, cameras, and where to find the library will also be discussed.

2. Simple Scene Creation – using figures and props from Poser’s library, Steve will show you how to set up your first basic scene.

3. Render Your First Illustration – using Poser’s Firefly engine. Learn how rendering transforms a 3D scene into a 2D picture, and in the process create your first illustration.
